Understanding Eton College Admissions

Eton College educates around 1,300 boys aged 13–18. The main entry route is 13+ (Year 9), with very limited Sixth Form (16+) places available each year.

Competition is fierce, and we have seen candidates applying from as far as Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, and across Europe. The process begins three to four years before entry, so families targeting September 2029 entry must begin preparation no later than 2025.

Eton requires more than just good grades, it looks for boys who combine academic strength with intellectual curiosity, kindness, and independence.

Step 1 – Register Early (Deadline 30 June in Year 5)

Registration must be completed by 30 June in the academic year when the candidate turns 10 (Year 5).

For example:

  • For 2029 entry, registration closes 30 June 2026
  • For 2028 entry, registration closes 30 June 2025

Registration requirements:

  • Complete the online form via Eton’s official portal
  • Pay the £400 registration fee
  • Upload a recent school report and birth certificate

Why early registration matters:
Late submissions are rarely accepted, and early applicants are automatically placed on Eton’s pre-test and assessment list.

Step 2 – Prepare for the ISEB Common Pre-Test (Oct–Dec in Year 6)

All registered candidates take the ISEB Common Pre-Test between early October and early December of Year 6.

This computer-based exam assesses:

  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non‑Verbal Reasoning
  • Mathematics
  • English

*Overseas applicants can take the test at a British Council-approved centre.

 Preparation timeline:

  • Start foundational practice: Summer Term Year 5
  • Build structured preparation: September Year 6
  • Sit mock tests: September–October Year 6

Eton relies heavily on these results to decide which boys advance to the next stage, making professional preparation invaluable.

Step 3 – The Eton Assessment and Interview (Jan–Feb Year 6 or 7)

Candidates who perform strongly in the pre-test are invited for the Eton Assessment, held in January February the following year.

For families targeting 2029 entry, assessments will take place in January 2027.

The assessment comprises:

  • Creative writing and comprehension tasks
  • Group problem-solving and reasoning exercises
  • A one-to-one interview with a senior tutor or House Master

What Eton looks for:

  • Depth of thought and curiosity
  • Communication skills and authentic engagement
  • Evidence of independent reasoning

Over-rehearsed or formulaic responses can harm performance, so it is important to keep in mind that natural conversation and flexible thinking are rated higher.

Step 4 – Conditional Offer and the Common Entrance Exam (Year 7 8)

Successful candidates receive a conditional offer from March of Year 7, around 18 months before entry.

They must then pass the Common Entrance Examination in May or June of Year 8 to confirm the place.

Subjects tested include:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • French or Latin
  • Geography, History, Religious Studies

Preparation roadmap:

  • Formal preparation starts: Spring Term Year 7
  • Mock exams: Autumn Term Year 8
  • Final revision: April–May Year 8

Only those achieving the required standard receive final confirmation from Eton in June of Year 8.

Step 5 – Final Confirmation and House Placement (June–September Year 8)

After successful Common Entrance results in June Year 8, Eton allocates pupils to one of its 25 boarding houses.

Placements are confirmed by September of Year 8, following discussions with House Masters.

Families can visit Eton for Open Afternoon events held in May and September to tour houses and meet boarding staff, which is an important step in aligning their child with a suitable environment. We can also facilitate these visits if needed.

How International Families Can Strengthen Their Application

Eton welcomes talented boys from around the world but expects fluency in English, academic maturity, and cultural adaptability.

International applicants should consider:

  • UK-based tutoring to align with the British curriculum
  • Mock interviews to practise British conversational tone
  • Essay workshops to refine written expression
  • Summer immersion programmes at UK prep schools

Elite British Admissions offers full guidance across all of these steps: From Common Pre-Test preparation to interview and relocation support.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Starting too late: Registration closes before age 10.
  • Over‑coaching: Natural curiosity scores higher than memorised answers.
  • Neglecting English fluency: Idiomatic and literary comprehension are crucial.
  • Ignoring personal growth: Leadership and creativity carry weight in interviews.
